Examples to try

A single digit subtraction worksheet

Use single-digit numbers for early learners building basic subtraction facts.

A 2-digit subtraction worksheet

Choose 2-digit numbers with no regrouping to start, then add borrowing later.

A 3-digit subtraction worksheet

Step up to 3-digit problems once students are confident with two digits.

A subtraction with regrouping worksheet

Use the with-regrouping option so every problem requires borrowing.

A subtraction without regrouping worksheet

Tips for better results

  • Start with no regrouping

Beginners do best with problems that don't borrow, so they can focus on subtracting by column.

  • Move to mixed regrouping next

Once students understand borrowing, mixed mode keeps them checking every column.

  • Use 2-digit before 3-digit

Build accuracy with two digits before moving to three- and four-digit problems.

  • Print the answer key separately

The PDF puts the answer key on its own page, so you can keep it apart from the student copy.

  • Use dry erase pockets for reuse

Slip a sheet into a dry erase pocket so students can practice the same set more than once.

  • Regenerate for different groups

Press Regenerate to make a fresh set with the same settings for another group or retake.

Under the hood

How the subtraction worksheet generator works

Each problem is built to match the settings you choose, and the top number is always at least as large as the bottom one, so answers are never negative. No-regrouping problems are made column by column so the top digit is never smaller than the bottom digit, which means there's nothing to borrow.

With-regrouping problems are checked using the same borrow-across-zeros method students use on paper, so they always require borrowing in at least one column, even in tricky cases like 302 minus 118 or 1000 minus 487. Mixed mode blends borrowing and non-borrowing problems. The vertical layout lines the digits up by place value, and the answer key always matches the worksheet exactly.

Everything is generated on your device, so you can make as many fresh worksheets as you like, instantly and for free. Press Regenerate for a brand-new set of problems using the same settings.
