Needed score = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w, where w is the final's share of the grade. With an 85% and a final worth 20%, a 90% needs (90 − 68) ÷ 0.2 = 110%, which isn't reachable, while an 80% needs (80 − 68) ÷ 0.2 = 60%.

A weighted final
Current grade 84%, final worth 20%, target 85%: you need 89% on the final, and the letter table shows the rest.
A points-based final
410 of 500 points so far and a 100-point final: an 80% course grade needs 70 points on the final.

Use the weight, not the points
In weighted mode, enter the final's share of the grade (for example 20%), not how many points it has.
Use your grade before the final
The current grade should cover everything except the final exam.
Check your syllabus rules
Dropped scores, replacement policies, or a required minimum on the final change the math.
Aim a little higher
Schools round differently, so leave a small cushion above the exact score shown.

How the final grade calculator works
When the final is worth a share of the grade, the rest of the course carries the other share: course grade = current × (1 − w) + final × w. The calculator solves that for the final score. With 0% and 100% on the final plugged in, it also shows the lowest and highest grade you can finish with.
When the grade is total points, the final's points are added to the pool: course grade = (points earned + final points) ÷ (points possible + final's points). It solves for the final points and shows them as a percentage too.
Needed scores are rounded up to the next hundredth, so the number shown is always enough. A result at or below 0% means the target is already secured; above 100% means it can't be reached on this final.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate what I need on my final?
Take your target grade, subtract your current grade times the share of the grade that isn't the final, and divide by the final's share. For an 85% with a final worth 20%, a 90% needs (90 − 85 × 0.8) ÷ 0.2 = 110%.
What if my final is graded in points, not a percentage?
Choose "It adds points" and enter your points earned and possible so far and what the final is worth. The calculator gives the points needed on the final as well as the percentage.
What does "not reachable" mean?
The target would need more than 100% on the final. The page shows the best course grade still possible if you score 100%.
What does "already secured" mean?
Even a 0% on the final keeps you at or above the target, so the final can't pull you below it.
Why is the needed score rounded up?
So that scoring exactly the number shown is always enough. Rounding down could leave you a fraction of a point short.
Which letter scale does the table use?
You choose: A–F with plus and minus, a 90/80/70/60 scale, percent only, or your own cutoffs. It opens on the 90/80/70/60 scale, or on whichever scale you used in the Grade Calculator.
Is anything saved or sent?
No. The calculation runs in your browser. When you arrive from the Grade Calculator, only the grade number and scale are passed in the link.
