Score Converter for Tests and Rubrics
Convert test scores between totals, such as 27 out of 40 to a percentage or out of 60, for one student or the whole class, and turn rubric levels into a fair grade.
A score keeps its place in the range: 27 out of 40 is 27 ÷ 40 = 67.5%, which is 40.5 out of 60 or 6.75 out of 10. For a rubric, 12 of 16 points is 75%; if a 1 on a 1–4 rubric shouldn't count as 25%, give each level its own percentage instead.
Decimal places
27 out of 40 → 67.5 out of 100(67.5%)
One score per line, optionally after a name: "Maya 27".
How to use the score converter
- 1Choose what the score is out of (40, 100, 20…) and what to convert it to.
- 2Type a score, or paste the whole class, one score per line with names if you like.
- 3Pick the decimal places; the result rounds half up.
- 4For a rubric, set the number of levels, the level for each criterion and optional weights.
- 5Choose points or your own percentage per level, then read the grade on the scale you need.
When this is useful
A test out of an odd total
Turn a 37-point quiz into percentages for the gradebook.
Moving between scales
Report a test out of 40 as part of a mark out of 60, or a percentage as a mark out of 10.
Converting the whole class
Paste a column of scores and copy back the converted column.
Rubric grading
Turn four criteria scored 1–4 into a percentage that matches how you grade.
Weighted criteria
Make content count double the presentation in a project rubric.
Examples to try
27 out of 40 → percent
67.5%.
27 out of 40 → out of 60
40.5.
14 out of 20 → percent
70%: the 20-point scale used in much of North Africa and France.
Rubric 3, 4, 2, 3 out of 4
12 of 16 points = 75%.
The same rubric with equivalents
With 4 = 100, 3 = 85, 2 = 70, 1 = 55, the grade is 85%.
Tips for better results
Know your minimum
On a 1–5 scale, a 1 is the bottom, not 20%. Set the lowest possible score so it converts correctly.
Points can be harsh on rubrics
On a 1–4 rubric, dividing points makes a student who did everything at level 2 fail with 50%. Equivalents per level avoid that.
Round once, at the end
Converting rounded numbers again adds error. Convert from the original score.
Check your school's rules
Some schools use their own conversion tables; this calculator uses a straight-line rescale.
How the score converter works
Conversion keeps each score's position in its range: converted = new minimum + (score − old minimum) ÷ (old maximum − old minimum) × (new maximum − new minimum). For scales starting at 0, that's simply score ÷ total × new total. Results round half up to the decimals you choose.
For rubrics, "points" adds the levels earned (times each criterion's weight) and divides by the most possible. "My percentage for each level" replaces each level with the percentage you set and takes the weighted average, which is how many teachers keep the lowest level from turning into a very low grade.

Frequently asked questions
How do I convert a score out of 40 to a percentage?
Divide by 40 and multiply by 100. 27 ÷ 40 × 100 = 67.5%. To get a mark out of another total, multiply the fraction by that total: 27 ÷ 40 × 60 = 40.5.
How do I convert rubric scores to a percentage?
Add the levels earned and divide by the most possible: 12 of 16 is 75%. If that makes low levels too harsh, set a percentage for each level and average them.
Why is my rubric grade so low?
Because levels usually start at 1, not 0. A student at level 2 on every criterion of a 4-level rubric gets 50% by points. Many teachers set equivalents such as 4 = 100, 3 = 85, 2 = 70, 1 = 55.
Can I convert a whole class at once?
Yes. Paste one score per line, with a name before it if you like, and the converted scores appear in a table.
Does it round?
Yes, half up, to 0, 1 or 2 decimal places. Convert from the original score rather than from a number you already rounded.
