Station Rotation Timer

Run learning stations and centers without watching the clock. Name your stations, choose groups, set the minutes and the time to move, then project a live rotation map with a big timer and a chime. Print the rotation chart for your wall or sub folder. Free, no sign-up.

A station rotation timer shows the whole class which group is at which station, how long is left, and when to move. Classeem builds the rotation so every group visits every station exactly once and no two groups ever share a station, runs the timer with an optional move-time between rotations, and prints the same plan as a chart. It works in your browser with no account, and student names, if you add them, stay on your device.

In plain words

What is station rotation?

Station rotation (also called centers or learning stations) is a way of organizing a lesson in which small groups move between several activities on a set schedule — for example a teacher-led group, independent practice, a game and a writing task — so the teacher can work closely with one group while the others practise.

A visible rotation chart and timer let students know where to go and when without asking, which keeps transitions short.

Example rotation (4 groups, 4 stations)

  • Red: teacher table → reading → word work → math game
  • Blue: reading → word work → math game → teacher table
  • Green: word work → math game → teacher table → reading
  • Gold: math game → teacher table → reading → word work
Step by step

How to use the station rotation timer

  • 1Name your stations (2 to 8) — for example teacher table, independent reading, word work and math game.
  • 2Choose how many groups; optionally put students into the groups from a class list saved on this device.
  • 3Set minutes at each station and the time to move between them, then press Show on board.
  • 4Press Start rotations. The board shows each group's station, counts down, and signals when to move. Print the chart for the wall.
When it helps

When this is useful

Literacy and math centers

Keep four or five centers moving while you teach a small group at the teacher table.

Guided reading rotations

Students check the board for their next station, so your group isn't interrupted.

Science and lab stations

Give each lab group equal time at each setup and a clear signal to clean up and move.

Review days and station games

Rotate review games or practice stations before a test with even, fair timing.

Substitute plans

Print the rotation chart with clock times so a substitute can run the same rotation.

In practice

Examples to try

Four centers, 12 minutes each

Four groups, four stations, 12 minutes plus 1 minute to move: the whole rotation takes 51 minutes.

Five stations, four groups

With fewer groups than stations, one station is free each round and every group still visits every station once.

Kindergarten centers with a manual change

Turn off Move on automatically, and the timer waits on "Time's up" until you press Next rotation.

Chart with clock times

Type a start time such as 9:15 and the printed chart shows when each rotation begins and ends.

Tips for better results

  • Leave a moving minute

A 30- to 60-second move time with a visible "Move to your next station" screen keeps transitions calm.

  • Start where you teach

Put your teacher table as station 1, so the group you see first is the one listed first on the chart.

  • Use colors students know

Rename groups to match the colors or names already on your center cards.

  • Use a presentation clicker

On the board, Space pauses or resumes and the arrow or a clicker jumps to the next rotation.

Under the hood

How the station rotation timer works

In each rotation, group 1 moves to the next station, group 2 to the one after, and so on, wrapping around at the end. That cycle means every group visits every station once and two groups are never at the same station, even when you have fewer groups than stations.

The countdown is worked out from the time that has actually passed, not by counting ticks, so it stays accurate if the browser tab is in the background. The chime uses your browser's own sound and can be turned off.

Your data

Private by design

  • No account and no sign-up. Just open it and start.
  • Everything runs on your device, so the station and group names you type and any student names you add stays with you.
  • Nothing you create is uploaded. No values, names, scores, or generated content are sent to our servers. If you're signed in, My Classeem's Recent Activity notes which tools you used — never what you did in them.
  • If you sign in, Save keeps only this generator's settings in your account (the kind of options you pick above), never what the sheet contains; auto-save, when it's on in your account, keeps the same settings after you print or download.
  • We use Google Analytics for anonymous, aggregate measurement: page views and a few usage events, such as a worksheet being printed or a game round starting or finishing (with the mode played). It never receives what you enter — no answers, scores, names, or generated content.

Frequently asked questions

How does the rotation work?

In each rotation every group moves to the next station in order, wrapping around at the end. Every group visits every station exactly once, and no two groups share a station.

Can I have more stations than groups?

Yes. With fewer groups than stations, one or more stations are free each rotation and every group still visits every station. You can't have more groups than stations, because two groups would have to share one.

Can I add students to the groups?

Yes. Turn on Put students into the groups and paste names or choose a class list saved on this device; the names are split into the groups and shown on the board and the chart. They never leave your browser.

Does it make a sound?

An optional chime plays when it's time to move and when a new rotation begins, using your browser's built-in sound. Turn it off with Chime at each change.

Can I control the rotations myself?

Yes. Turn off Move on automatically and the timer stops at the end of each rotation until you press Next rotation. You can also pause, skip ahead or start over at any time.

Can I print the rotation chart?

Yes. Print chart gives a table of groups and rotations with each station, and clock times if you enter a start time.
