Math Equation Builder

Play a free math equation builder game that turns word-problem reading into real equation-writing practice. Read a fresh, procedurally generated story, tap the two numbers it describes, pick the operator that matches what happened in the story, then type the result on a number pad. Five grade levels move from single-digit addition and subtraction through multiplication, division, and a mixed challenge, with no sign-up and nothing saved.

This free math equation builder game's core skill is translating a word problem into an equation, not just computing an answer: the player must choose the correct operator to represent what the story describes (combining, removing, grouping, or sharing) before the built equation is accepted as correct, so guessing the right number without the right operator doesn't count.

Ready to build an equation?

Read the story, tap the numbers and operator that match it, then type the answer.

Step by step

How to use the math equation builder

  • 1Choose a grade level — it sets which operations and number ranges appear.
  • 2Read the word problem and tap the two numbers it describes into the equation's blanks.
  • 3Tap the operator (+, −, ×, ÷) that matches what happens in the story.
  • 4Type the result on the number pad, then tap Check.
When it helps

When this is useful

Word problem to equation practice

Build the specific skill of translating a story into a numeric equation, the step many students skip straight past.

Operator sense

Practice recognizing which operation a story describes, whether numbers combine, shrink, group, or split.

Grade-aware math warm-ups

Pick a grade level and get an appropriately scoped operation and number range automatically.

Progression from addition through division

Move from single-digit addition and subtraction up through multiplication, division, and a mixed challenge.

Classroom projector warm-up

Put a round on the projector and have the class call out the operator before a student builds the equation.

In practice

Examples to try

Grade 1: add & subtract to 18

Single-digit numbers only, with sums and minuends capped at 18.

Grade 3: adds multiplication & division

Equal-groups multiplication and sharing/grouping division join addition and subtraction to 99.

Grade 5: mixed challenge

All four operations with the widest number ranges, one random operation per problem.

Tips for better results

  • Look for the action word

Words like 'gives away' or 'shares equally' point to the operation, not just the numbers in the story.

  • Getting the number right isn't enough

The equation only counts as correct when the operator matches the story too, so a lucky guess won't pass.

  • Start one grade below where you'd expect

Since problems are freshly generated every round, an easier grade still gives real, varied practice, not a memorized set.

  • Watch subtraction and division order

For those two operations, which number goes first matters — placing them backwards won't reach the right answer.

Under the hood

How the math equation builder works

Every word problem is generated from a story family (combining collections, giving something away, equal groups, sharing equally, and more), never pulled from a fixed list, so the wording, characters, and numbers are different nearly every time.

An answer is only accepted when the tapped operator matches the story's real operation and the typed result is exactly correct — a numeric coincidence between two different operations (like 2+2 and 2×2) is never credited as correct.

Grade levels change which operations and number ranges are in play: Grade 1 stays single-digit addition and subtraction, Grade 3 introduces multiplication and division, and Grade 5 mixes all four operations at the widest ranges.

Frequently asked questions

Is this math equation builder game free?

Yes, completely free, with no account and no limit on how many rounds you play. There are no ads.

What operations does it cover?

Addition and subtraction from Grade 1, with multiplication and division added starting at Grade 3. Grade 5 mixes all four operations.

Why did my answer count as wrong even though the number was right?

The equation only counts as correct when the operator matches what the story describes. Getting the right total with the wrong operator (for example, adding instead of multiplying) isn't credited, since the goal is building the right equation, not just computing a number.

Are the word problems repeated?

No. Problems are generated from story templates, actors, objects, and numbers, so the exact wording and numbers are almost always different from round to round.

Does this use AI?

No. Every word problem and equation check runs on plain, deterministic logic in your browser. It does not use AI.

Does the game work well on a tablet or phone?

Yes. Every tile, operator, and number-pad key is a large tap target, and the layout adjusts to narrower screens.

Are scores saved?

No. Your score, streak, and session best stay in your browser for the current session and are cleared when you leave the page.
