Exponents Worksheet Generator

Make a printable exponents worksheet in seconds: find the value of powers, write repeated multiplication as a power and back, find a missing base or exponent, and simplify with the laws of exponents. Three levels, with an answer key.

Pick the practice and a level, then print or download the PDF. Easy keeps to squares, cubes and powers of 10; Standard goes up to the fifth power and adds products and quotients of powers; Challenge adds the exponent 0, negative bases and powers of powers.

Answer key

In plain words

What is an exponent?

An exponent tells you how many times to multiply a number, the base, by itself. In 3⁴ the base is 3 and the exponent is 4: 3⁴ = 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 = 81.

Any number to the power 1 is itself, and any non-zero number to the power 0 is 1. Powers of the same base multiply by adding exponents (2³ × 2⁴ = 2⁷), divide by subtracting them (5⁶ ÷ 5² = 5⁴), and a power of a power multiplies them ((3²)⁴ = 3⁸).

Step by step

How to use the exponents worksheet generator

  • 1Choose the practice: find the value, power ↔ product, missing base or exponent, laws of exponents, or a mixed sheet.
  • 2Pick a level; the note under the menus lists what it includes.
  • 3Choose 12 to 24 problems and whether to include the answer key.
  • 4Press Regenerate worksheet for different problems, then print or download the PDF.
When it helps

When this is useful

First lessons on powers

Use Easy with power ↔ product so students see that 5³ means 5 × 5 × 5, not 5 × 3.

Fluency with squares and cubes

Easy evaluation sheets drill the squares to 12² and cubes to 6³ that later work depends on.

Exponent laws

The laws practice asks for a single power, so students apply the rule instead of computing large numbers.

Negative numbers and order of operations

Challenge puts −3² next to (−3)², the pair that shows why brackets matter.

In practice

Examples to try

Find the value

2⁵ = 32, 10⁴ = 10,000, 7¹ = 7.

Power ↔ product

6 × 6 × 6 × 6 = 6⁴ and 2³ × 5² = 2 × 2 × 2 × 5 × 5.

Missing number

2^□ = 64 → 6, and □³ = 125 → 5.

Laws of exponents

4³ × 4⁵ = 4⁸, 9⁷ ÷ 9³ = 9⁴, (2³)⁴ = 2¹².

Signs, Challenge

−3² = −9 but (−3)² = 9; (−2)³ = −8; 7⁰ = 1.

Tips for better results

  • Name the base and the exponent

Ask students to say which number is multiplied and how many times before they calculate.

  • Watch for 5³ = 15

Multiplying base by exponent is the most common mistake. The power ↔ product practice targets it directly.

  • Keep answers as powers

On the laws practice, the key writes each answer as a single power; ask for the same so the rule is the focus.

  • Use a calculator to check, not to solve

Large values such as 9⁵ = 59,049 are a good place to check work with a calculator after solving.

Under the hood

How the exponents worksheet generator works

Problems are generated from a seed, so the same settings give the same sheet. Every value is an exact whole number, checked by unit tests, and large answers are grouped with commas (59,049).

A missing base or exponent always has exactly one whole-number answer. The laws practice uses the same base on both sides, so every answer is a single power.

Frequently asked questions

What grade is this for?

Squares, cubes and powers of 10 usually appear in grades 5 and 6; whole-number exponents and the laws of exponents in grades 6 to 8. Use the level to match your class.

Does it include negative exponents or fractions?

No. All exponents are whole numbers from 0 up, and bases are whole numbers. Negative bases appear only at Challenge, always in brackets or with the minus clearly outside the power.

Why is −3² equal to −9?

The exponent applies only to the 3, so −3² means −(3 × 3) = −9. With brackets, (−3)² = (−3) × (−3) = 9. Challenge sheets include both forms.

How are answers to the laws written?

As a single power, such as 4⁸. Students don't need to compute the value.

Is there an answer key?

Yes. It prints on its own page, after the student pages.
