Examples to try

A blank place value chart

Print empty charts students can use as a number is read aloud or for their own numbers.

A whole number place value worksheet

Use fill mode with a thousands or millions range so students place each digit correctly.

A decimal place value chart

Choose decimals and the tenths-to-thousandths range to practice place value past the point.

An expanded form worksheet

Use expanded form mode so students write numbers as the sum of their place values.

A value-of-a-digit practice sheet

Use value mode to underline one digit per number and ask students for its value.

Tips for better results

  • Start with whole numbers

Build a strong base with whole-number place value before adding decimals.

  • Use fewer columns for younger students

A smaller range, like ones to thousands, keeps the chart clear for beginners.

  • Add decimals after tenths and hundredths

Introduce decimal places once students are comfortable reading tenths and hundredths.

  • Mix in expanded form

Expanded form connects the chart to how a number is actually built from its places.

  • Print the answer key separately

The PDF puts the answer key on its own page, so you can keep it apart from the student copy.

  • Use dry erase pockets for reuse

Slip a chart into a dry erase pocket so students can practice with new numbers again and again.

Under the hood

How the place value chart generator works

Pick a chart type and range, and the tool lays out the place value columns in order, from the largest place down to the smallest, with whole-number places to the left of the decimal point and decimal places to the right. Numbers are generated to fit the range and difficulty, with commas added to large whole numbers and a clear decimal point for decimals.

Each practice mode does something different. Fill mode shows a number and an empty chart to complete, blank mode gives an empty chart to use freely, value mode underlines one digit and asks for its value, and expanded form asks students to write the number as a sum of its places. The answer key fills in the charts and gives the correct values and expanded forms, so it always matches the worksheet.
