Reading Passages by Skill, with Questions and an Answer Key

Choose a grade and a reading skill, and get a printable sheet of short original passages where every question practises that one skill: main idea, sequencing, cause and effect, character traits, inferences, author's purpose, summarizing, or theme. Each sheet comes with an answer key and prints or downloads as a PDF. Free, no sign-up, and it runs in your browser.

Reading Passages by Skill lets you choose a grade (2–4) and one comprehension skill — main idea, sequencing, cause and effect, character traits, inferences, author's purpose, summarizing, or theme — and builds a printable sheet of short original passages where every question targets that skill, with an answer key and a PDF.

2. Skill

Not offered for Grade 3: Theme (grade 4). Kindergarten, grade 1, and grade 5 aren't offered: the passages need independent reading and written answers, and they are too simple for grade 5.

Main idea · Grade 3On level

On level for Grade 3: the passages and the questions suit this grade.

Every question asks about this skill: What each passage is mostly about, the best title for it, and the details that support the main idea.

The grade does not change the passages: it chooses which skills are offered and labels how well they fit. Every skill uses the same short original passages (about 20–40 words, written for roughly grades 2–3), several to a sheet, each with its own question. Multiple-choice, matching, and ordering answers have exact keys; written answers show a model answer or what to accept. The generator's Difficulty setting is separate from grade. PDF puts the answer key on its own page.

When it helps

When this is useful

Skill-focused mini lessons

Teach one strategy, then hand out passages that practise only that strategy.

Small groups and intervention

Give each group the skill it needs most from the same page; Easier text sets suit students reading below grade level.

Tutoring

Target the one skill a student is missing instead of a mixed comprehension test.

In practice

Examples to try

Grade 2 · Sequencing

Short passages where students number the events in the order they happened.

Grade 3 · Main idea

Several short passages, each followed by a multiple-choice question about what it is mostly about.

Grade 4 · Theme (easier text)

Short stories where students choose the lesson each story teaches; switch the format to Evidence to have them find the sentence that shows it.

Tips for better results

  • Model one passage first

Do the first passage together, thinking aloud about how you found the answer, then let students finish the sheet.

  • Keep the same skill for a week

Regenerate each day for new passages on the same skill so practice builds without repeating texts.

  • Ask for the evidence

Even on multiple-choice questions, have students underline the words in the passage that prove their answer.

Under the hood

How the reading passages by skill works

Each skill uses Classeem's generator for that skill and its bank of short original passages, written for this purpose.

Every question on the sheet asks about the chosen skill; nothing from other skills is mixed in.

Multiple-choice, matching, and ordering questions have one correct answer in the key; written questions get a model answer or what to accept.

The grade does not change the passages. We reviewed every passage and question by hand and list a skill only for grades where it fits: On level, or Easier text when the skill is taught at that grade but the passages are below grade level.

Frequently asked questions

Are the questions really about the skill I pick?

Yes. Each skill is built by its own generator, and every question on the sheet asks about that skill, for example only main idea, best title, and supporting details for Main idea.

How long are the passages, and does the grade change them?

No, the grade does not change them. Every passage is short, about 20 to 40 words, written for roughly grades 2–3, so a page holds several passages, each with its own question. For one longer passage with mixed questions, use the Reading Comprehension Worksheet Generator.

Which skills and grades are covered?

Grades 2–4. On level: main idea, sequencing, and cause and effect in grades 2–3; character traits, inferences, author's purpose, and summarizing in grade 3. Easier text (skill practice below grade level): main idea, cause and effect, character traits, inferences, author's purpose, summarizing, and theme in grade 4. Kindergarten, grade 1, and grade 5 are not offered.

Is there an answer key?

Yes. It prints on its own page and is included in the PDF. Written answers show a model answer or what to accept rather than a single exact wording.

Can I change the questions or get new passages?

Yes. The settings let you choose the question format and how many passages to include, and Regenerate draws a new set of passages for the same skill.
