Tips for better results

  • Keep words short for younger students

Three to six letter words are easiest to unscramble and help early spellers build confidence.

  • Use Easy mode for younger learners

Easy mode keeps the first letter in place, which gives beginners a helpful head start.

  • Use Challenge mode for older students

Challenge mode fully scrambles every word and shuffles the order, so the answer key isn't a giveaway.

  • Use phrases sparingly

A few short phrases work well, but long phrases get hard to unscramble. Mostly single words read best.

  • Turn on the word bank for support

Add a word bank when you want a gentler activity, and leave it off when you want more of a challenge.

  • Print the answer key separately

The PDF puts the answer key on its own page, so you can keep it apart from the student copy.

Under the hood

How the word scramble maker works

When you enter a word list, the tool cleans it up for you: it trims spaces, skips blank lines, tidies the spacing, can make everything uppercase, and can remove duplicates. Each word is then scrambled right in your browser.

The letters of each word are shuffled into a new order, and the tool avoids handing back the exact original word whenever a different arrangement is possible. Phrases keep their spaces, so each word is scrambled on its own. Easy mode keeps the first letter in place, Standard fully scrambles each word, and Challenge also shuffles the order of the list.

Press Regenerate for a brand-new scramble using the same words and settings. Everything is generated on your device, so you can make as many fresh versions as you like, instantly and for free. The answer key always matches the worksheet exactly.

Frequently asked questions

Is the word scramble maker free?

Yes, completely free, with no account and no limit on how many worksheets you make. There's no watermark on the printed sheet.

Can I print the worksheet?

Yes. Use the Print button to send the worksheet straight to your printer. The layout stays clean and classroom-ready, with room to write each answer.

Can I download a PDF?

Yes. Download a clean PDF built right on your device. The worksheet is on the first page and, when you include the answer key, it appears on its own page.

Does it include an answer key?

Yes. You can view the answer key on screen and include it in the printout or PDF, where each numbered answer lines up with the scrambled word.

Can I use phrases, not just single words?

Yes. Type one word or short phrase per line. The spaces between words are kept, and the letters inside each word are scrambled, so a phrase like solar system becomes two scrambled words.

Can I keep the first letter visible?

Yes. Choose Easy mode and the first letter of each word stays in place, which gives younger students a helpful clue.

Are my words uploaded or saved anywhere?

No. The whole worksheet is built on your device, and the PDF is created there too, so your word list is never uploaded or stored on a server.

What makes a good word scramble worksheet?

Mostly single words at the right reading level, a sensible difficulty, and an answer key for quick grading. Add a word bank to support younger or struggling students, and leave it off to make the activity harder.
