Tips for better results

  • Keep words short for younger students

Three to six letter words and an easy grid make a puzzle that early readers can finish with confidence.

  • Use a larger grid for long lists

If you have many words or longer ones, choose a bigger grid so everything fits comfortably.

  • Go easy on long phrases

Spaces are removed when a phrase is hidden, so a few short phrases work better than many long ones.

  • Print the answer key separately

The PDF puts the answer key on its own page, so you can keep it apart from the student copy.

  • Match difficulty to the grade

Start with across and down for younger classes, then add backward and diagonal words to challenge older students.

Under the hood

How the word search maker works

When you enter a word list, the tool cleans it up for you: it trims spaces, skips blank lines, makes everything uppercase, and can remove duplicates. Phrases keep their spaces in the word bank, but only their letters are hidden in the grid.

Each word is placed into the grid so that any cells two words share always hold the same letter, which means words can cross without ever clashing. Backward and diagonal placements turn on as you raise the difficulty. Once the words are in, the remaining cells are filled with random letters.

Everything is generated on your device, so you can regenerate fresh layouts as many times as you like, instantly and for free. If a word is too long for the grid, or the list is too crowded to fit, the tool tells you and suggests a quick fix.

Your data

Private by design

  • No account and no sign-up. Just open it and start.
  • Everything runs on your device, so the words you enter and the puzzle you make stays with you.
  • Nothing you create is uploaded. No values, names, scores, or generated content are sent to our servers.
  • We use Google Analytics only for basic, anonymous pageview counts. It never receives what you enter into the tool.

Frequently asked questions

Is the word search maker free?

Yes, completely free, with no account and no limit on how many puzzles you make. There's no watermark on the printed sheet.

Can I print the puzzle?

Yes. Use the Print button to send the puzzle straight to your printer. You can also choose to print the answer key, and the layout stays clean and classroom-ready.

Can I download a PDF?

Yes. Download a clean PDF built right on your device. The puzzle is on the first page and, when you include the answer key, it appears on its own second page.

Does it include an answer key?

Yes. You can show the answer key on screen, where each hidden word is highlighted in the grid, and include it in the printout or PDF.

Can I use phrases, not just single words?

Yes. Type one word or short phrase per line. Spaces and punctuation are removed when the phrase is hidden in the grid, but the full phrase still appears in the word bank.

What happens if a word does not fit?

If a word is longer than the grid, the tool flags it so you can shorten it or pick a bigger grid. If the list is too crowded to place every word, it lets you know and suggests a larger grid or fewer words.

Are my words uploaded or saved anywhere?

No. The whole puzzle is built on your device, and the PDF is created there too, so your word list is never uploaded or stored on a server.

What grid size should I choose?

A 10×10 or 12×12 grid suits most short lists and younger students. Choose 15×15 or 20×20 when you have more words, longer words, or want a bigger challenge.
