Tips for better results

  • Use words that share letters

Crosswords interlock best when words have common letters, so a varied list crosses more cleanly.

  • Keep clues short and clear

One short, specific clue per word reads best on the page and is easier for students to solve.

  • Avoid too many very long words

A mix of short and medium words fits and crosses more reliably than several long ones.

  • Use a larger grid for longer lists

If some words won't fit, switch to a bigger grid so there's room for everything to interlock.

  • Regenerate for a better layout

Press Regenerate to try a fresh arrangement. Some seeds pack the words together more neatly.

  • Print the answer key separately

The PDF puts the filled-in answer grid on its own page, so you can keep it apart from the student copy.

Under the hood

How the crossword puzzle maker works

Type one word and clue per line. The tool accepts a few simple formats, so you can separate the word from its clue with a dash, a colon, a vertical bar, or a tab. It trims spaces, skips blank lines, makes the grid words uppercase, removes punctuation from the words, and can remove duplicates, while keeping your clue text exactly as you wrote it.

To build the puzzle, the tool starts with a longer word and then fits the rest around it, crossing words wherever their letters match. It follows real crossword rules, so words never run together end to end and a new word never sits right alongside another. It tries several arrangements and keeps the one that places the most words in the neatest, most connected grid, then numbers the clue starts and sorts them into Across and Down lists.

Everything happens on your device, so you can regenerate fresh layouts as many times as you like, instantly and for free. If a word is too long for the grid, or some words can't be crossed in, the tool tells you and suggests a quick fix.

Frequently asked questions

Is the crossword puzzle maker free?

Yes, completely free, with no account and no limit on how many puzzles you make. There's no watermark on the printed sheet.

Can I print the crossword?

Yes. Use the Print button to send the worksheet straight to your printer. The grid and the Across and Down clue lists stay clean and classroom-ready.

Can I download a PDF?

Yes. Download a clean PDF built right on your device. The crossword and clues are on the first page, and when you include the answer key it appears on its own page.

Does it include an answer key?

Yes. You can view the answer key on screen and include it in the printout or PDF, where the grid is shown filled in so every Across and Down answer is easy to check.

How should I format words and clues?

Put one word and clue per line, and separate them with a dash, a colon, a vertical bar, or a tab. For example: planet - A world that orbits a star. The word goes in the grid and the rest becomes the clue.

What if some words do not fit?

If a word can't be crossed into the grid, the tool lets you know. Try a larger grid, fewer or shorter words, or words that share more letters, and press Regenerate for a new layout.

Are my words and clues uploaded or saved anywhere?

No. The whole puzzle is built on your device, and the PDF is created there too, so your words and clues are never uploaded or stored on a server.

What makes a good classroom crossword?

A list of words that share letters, short and specific clues, and a grid size that gives the words room to interlock. Add an answer key for quick checking and keep the puzzle focused on one topic.
