Tips for better results

  • Keep weekly lists short for younger students

Six to ten words is plenty for early spellers and leaves room for careful writing.

  • Reuse the same list in different modes

Run the week's words through write each word, then trace, then a spelling test.

  • Start with familiar spelling patterns

Grouping words by a shared pattern, like short i or silent e, makes practice stick.

  • Use trace mode for extra support

Tracing the light gray word first helps students who need a model before writing.

  • Pair spelling words with other practice

Run the same words through flashcards or a word search for a different angle.

  • Print on cardstock or use dry erase pockets

Sturdier sheets or reusable sleeves let students practice the same words all week.

Under the hood

How the spelling worksheet generator works

You pick a spelling preset or paste your own list, and the generator builds a practice sheet. Custom words are cleaned up right in your browser: spaces, commas, tabs, and new lines all work as separators, extra spaces are trimmed, repeats are removed, and very long entries are skipped so the layout always stays neat.

Each mode lays the words out a little differently. Write each word gives one writing line, trace and write shows the word in light gray to trace, write three times gives three lines, letter boxes give one box per letter, and spelling test gives numbered blank lines with the word list saved for the answer key. Only the spelling test mode has an answer key, since the writing modes don't need one.

The preset lists are small, common spelling words chosen for general practice. Everything runs on your device, so you can make as many worksheets as you like, instantly and for free.

Frequently asked questions

Is the spelling worksheet generator free?

Yes, completely free, with no account and no limit on how many worksheets you make. There's no watermark on the printed sheet.

Can I print spelling worksheets?

Yes. Use the Print button to send the worksheet straight to your printer. Only the worksheet prints, with clean, readable words, and nothing else from the web page.

Can I download a PDF?

Yes. Download a clean PDF built right on your device, ready to print or share. Spelling tests can include an answer key on its own page.

Can I enter my own spelling words?

Yes. Paste your weekly list separated by commas, spaces, or new lines. The list is cleaned up automatically and used right away.

Can I make a weekly spelling test?

Yes. Choose the spelling test mode for numbered blank lines, and turn on the answer key to print your word list on a separate page.

Can I make trace and write spelling worksheets?

Yes. The trace and write mode shows each word in light gray to trace, then gives a line to write it. You can also choose write each word, write three times, or letter boxes.

Does it include an answer key?

The spelling test mode has an optional answer key that lists the words in order. The other practice modes are writing practice, so they don't need one.
