Spelling Bee Game

Play a free spelling bee game right in your browser. Read a short clue sentence, type the word it describes, and get instant feedback with a streak and score. Choose Easy, Medium, or Hard words, pick Practice or Challenge mode with hearts, and turn on optional spoken pronunciation. It's a real spelling practice game, not a worksheet with buttons, with no sign-up and nothing saved.

This free spelling bee game gives a clue sentence for each word instead of just showing it, so kids spell from meaning and context, the way an actual spelling bee works. Practice mode is untimed with no hearts; Challenge mode adds 3 hearts and a streak bonus. Works on desktop, tablet, and mobile, with an optional "hear the word" button and an optional hint.

When it helps

When this is useful

Put it on the projector for a whole-class round, or hand out devices for independent Practice mode.

Spelling bee prep

Challenge mode's hearts and streak add real stakes for students getting ready for a school spelling bee.

Weekly word list practice

Turn on "Use my own word list" and paste this week's spelling words, with an optional clue for each.

Home and tutoring practice

Parents and tutors can run a quick round with no printing, no prep, and no account.

Vocabulary in context

Because every word appears in a clue sentence, students practice spelling words the way they're actually used.

Tips for better results

  • Start in Practice mode

No hearts and no time pressure means students can focus on the word before trying Challenge.

  • Use the clue, not just the sound

Reading the sentence first helps students connect the word's spelling to its meaning.

  • Save Hint for genuinely tricky words

Hint reveals the first letter but halves that word's points, so it's worth using sparingly.

  • Write your own clues for tricky homophones

A custom word list lets you write a clue that makes words like "their" and "there" unambiguous.

Under the hood

How the spelling bee game works

Each word comes from a short clue sentence with the target word left out, so you spell from context and meaning instead of copying a word already on the screen. Type your answer and submit to check it instantly.

Practice mode is untimed with no hearts, so you can take as long as you need. Challenge mode gives you 3 hearts — an incorrect word costs one — plus a growing score bonus the longer your correct-answer streak runs.

Everything runs in your browser. An optional "Hear the word" button uses your browser's built-in speech feature when it's available, but the game never depends on it — the clue and the typed answer are always enough to play.

Your data

Private by design

  • No account and no sign-up. Just open it and start.
  • Everything runs on your device, so the word list, game settings, and any custom words or clues you type stays with you.
  • Nothing you create is uploaded. No values, names, scores, or generated content are sent to our servers.
  • We use Google Analytics only for basic, anonymous pageview counts. It never receives what you enter into the tool.
Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Is this spelling bee game free?

Yes, completely free, with no account and no limit on how many rounds you play. There are no ads.

Is this an online spelling test game?

It's a practice game, not a graded test. It gives a clue sentence, checks your spelling instantly, and tracks your streak and score for the current session — nothing is recorded or reported.

How is this different from just showing the word?

Each word comes from a short clue sentence with the word left out, so you spell from context and meaning — much closer to how a real spelling bee works than copying a word off the screen.

Can I use my own spelling list?

Yes. Turn on "Use my own word list" and paste your words, one per line. Add an optional clue after a colon, like "harvest: Farmers ___ crops in the fall."

Does it read the words aloud?

When your browser supports it, an optional "Hear the word" button uses your browser's built-in speech feature to say the word. The game is fully playable without it — nothing depends on speech working.

What's the difference between Practice and Challenge?

Practice is untimed with no hearts, so you can take your time. Challenge gives you 3 hearts — the round ends when they run out — plus a streak bonus for spelling several words in a row correctly.

Does this use AI?

No. This is a browser-only spelling game with an original word bank. It does not use AI, and the game runs on your device.

Are scores or word lists saved?

No. Your session's score and any custom word list stay in your browser and are cleared when you leave the page. Nothing is uploaded or stored on a server.
