Tips for better results
The remainder is always smaller than the divisor
If a student's remainder is equal to or larger than the divisor, the quotient can go up by one.
Use the check line every time
Multiplying back (quotient × divisor + remainder) is the quickest way to confirm an answer.
Estimate the quotient first
458 ÷ 7 is a bit more than 420 ÷ 7 = 60, so an answer in the 60s makes sense.
Talk about what the remainder means
In a story problem, a remainder may mean one more bus, leftover cookies, or a part of a whole.
How the division with remainders worksheets works
Each problem is built backward from a quotient and a remainder, so the answer is right by construction: dividend = quotient × divisor + remainder, and the remainder is always at least 1 and less than the divisor (unless you choose some remainders, where a few problems divide evenly). Dividends stay inside the chosen size, and divisors are never 0 or 1 when a remainder is needed.
Long division gets working room under each house that grows with the dividend: 3 lines for 2-digit dividends, 5 for 3-digit, 7 for 4-digit. The check line asks for the multiplication that proves the answer, and the answer key fills it in next to the quotient and remainder, written like 65 R 3.

How do you check a division answer with a remainder?
