Answer key

Step by step

How to use the 2-digit by 2-digit multiplication worksheets

  • 1Pick a level: multiples of ten, no regrouping, with regrouping, or a mix.
  • 2Choose the layout (room for partial products, compact, or horizontal) and how many problems.
  • 3Press Regenerate for new problems, then print or download the PDF. The answer key can show both partial products and the product.
  • 4For two groups, choose 2 levels: one PDF with a no-regrouping sheet and a regrouping sheet, each with its key.
When it helps

When this is useful

Teaching the standard algorithm

Start with no-regrouping problems so students learn where each partial product goes before carrying.

Checking students' work

The partial products in the key show where a wrong answer went off track, not just that it's wrong.

Small groups at two levels

Print Level 1 (no regrouping) and Level 2 (regrouping) in one PDF for two groups working on the same skill.

Mental math warm-ups

Multiples of ten, like 30 × 40, practice the place-value step inside every 2-digit problem.

Homework and review

Send home a short page of 6 or 9 problems with enough room to show the work.

In practice

Examples to try

No regrouping

Problems like 21 × 13 (63 + 210 = 273) where no step carries, for learning the layout.

With regrouping

Problems like 47 × 36, with carrying in the partial products (282 + 1,410 = 1,692).

Multiples of ten

30 × 40 = 1,200: multiply 3 × 4, then place the two zeros.

Tips for better results

  • Model the zero in the second row

When multiplying by the tens digit, the second partial product ends in 0 because you're really multiplying by a multiple of ten.

  • Estimate first

    47 × 36 is close to 50 × 40 = 2,000, so an answer near 1,700 is reasonable and 16,920 isn't.

  • Use the partial products to find mistakes

If the product is wrong, compare each partial product to the key to see which step slipped.

  • Keep sets short

Each problem takes several steps; 6 to 12 careful problems beat 30 rushed ones.

Under the hood

How the 2-digit by 2-digit multiplication worksheets works

Every problem multiplies two 2-digit numbers. With no regrouping, no step of the standard algorithm carries: each digit product is 9 or less, and the partial products add without carrying. With regrouping, at least one step carries. Outside the multiples-of-ten level, neither ones digit is 0, so every problem has two real partial products to write.

The partial products are the two rows of the standard algorithm: the first number times the ones digit, then times the tens digit (shifted one place, so it ends in 0). For 47 × 36 they are 282 and 1,410, which add to 1,692. The room-for-partial-products layout leaves those two rows and a sum line under each problem, and the answer key can fill them in.

Problems are generated on your device from a starting number, so Regenerate gives a new set and the answer key always matches. Nothing you choose is uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

What grade is 2-digit by 2-digit multiplication?

In the Common Core math standards used in many US states, multiplying two 2-digit numbers with place-value strategies is a 4th grade skill (4.NBT.B.5), and fluency with the standard algorithm is expected in 5th grade (5.NBT.B.5). Follow your own state's or program's standards.

What are partial products?

They're the rows you write before the final answer: the first number times the ones digit, then times the tens digit. For 47 × 36, that's 47 × 6 = 282 and 47 × 30 = 1,410, and 282 + 1,410 = 1,692.

What does “no regrouping” mean here?

No step carries: every digit multiplication is 9 or less, and adding the partial products never makes 10 in a column. 21 × 13 (63 + 210) has no regrouping; 47 × 36 does.

Can I print two levels for different groups?

Yes. Choose 2 levels under Versions: the PDF has a Level 1 sheet (no regrouping) and a Level 2 sheet (with regrouping), each labeled and followed by its own answer key.

How is this different from the Multiplication Worksheet Generator?

The Multiplication Worksheet Generator covers every size from facts to 3-digit × 2-digit. This page is only 2-digit × 2-digit, with levels for regrouping and room for partial products that the compact sheets don't have.

Is there an answer key?

Yes. Turn it on and the PDF adds a key page after the worksheet. With the partial-products layout, the key can also show both partial products.

Is it free, and is anything saved?

It's free with no account. The problems and the PDF are made in your browser, and nothing is uploaded.
