Tips for better results

  • Start small for new readers

The small board and beginner set keep the game short and build early confidence.

  • Read each word aloud

Encourage students to say each word as they flip it, so matching doubles as reading practice.

  • Use your own words

Type this week's words so the game matches exactly what your class is learning.

  • Grow the board over time

Move from small to medium to large boards as students get comfortable remembering positions.

  • Pair it with a worksheet

Follow the game with a sight word or spelling worksheet for written practice.

  • Play for accuracy, not speed

There is no timer, so encourage careful reading and remembering where words are.

Under the hood

How the sight word match game works

Each board is built from the word set you choose, or from words you type yourself. The game picks distinct words and makes two cards for each, then shuffles them all. You flip two cards at a time: if the words match, the pair stays open; if not, the cards flip back so you can try again.

Matching is tracked by a hidden pair id, not just the letters on the card, so the game always knows which two cards belong together. Boards are shuffled with a seed, so New game deals a fresh board and Restart replays the same one. The word lists are original, neutral, early-reading words written for this game.

Everything runs on your device. There is no timer, no sound, and no score saving in this version, and any words you type stay in your browser, just a calm reading game you can play as many times as you like, for free.
