Tips for better results
Start with short-vowel families
Short-vowel families are the most foundational — start there before mixing in long-vowel families.
Say the word family aloud
Have students say the masked word and its family ending aloud before tapping, to build the sound-spelling connection.
Watch the streak, not just the score
A growing streak shows a student is recognizing the pattern quickly, not just getting lucky guesses.
Pair it with the worksheet
Follow a round with the Word Families worksheet's sort-by-family mode for written practice on the same families.
How the word family rescue game works
Every round reuses the exact same 20-family word bank as the Word Families worksheet generator (lib/word-families), so the two products always stay in sync — a family added to one is available in the other. Each word is masked the same way the worksheet's onset-blank mode does: the shared family ending stays visible, and the beginning becomes an underscore per missing letter.
A round draws a shuffled set of words from the chosen family group (short-vowel, long-vowel, or mixed), with two plausible distractor family endings alongside the correct one — never an obviously-wrong filler option. Rounds are seeded, so the same settings and seed always produce the same set (reproducible, SSR-safe); New game bumps the seed for a fresh set.
Everything runs on your device. Sound effects are optional and off by default (a simple Web Audio tone, no files), and the game respects your browser's reduced-motion setting. Nothing is saved between sessions and nothing is uploaded.
Private by design
